Shrouded by legends and myths, Kyiv lies on the seven picturesque hills along the mighty Dnipro River. It has an attractive geographical location and the region is bountiful with natural resources. The history of Kyiv dates back to the ancient times. There is an archeological evidence of human life from the Stone Age and hunters from Scythian, Gothic, and Slavic tribes. Within the area of Kyiv, there are indications of Trypillian civilization that dates back to the third millennium BC.
In “The Tale of Bygone Years” it is said that the ancient city was founded by three brothers – Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv, and their sister Lybid. The city was named in honor of the eldest brother. For centuries, the history of Kyiv was a time of ups and downs, successes and defeats, destructions and revivals until the 9th century when Prince Oleg united the northern Slavonic lands and Kyiv became the center of Kyivan Rus.
In 988 Volodymyr introduced Christianity in Kyivan Rus. Since then, Kyiv became the spiritual center of Eastern Europe.
At the beginning of the 20th c., Kyiv was already known as a historical and scientific center as well as the center of Ukrainian national identity. At present, Kyiv is a rapidly developing European capital that combines its ancient history, unique culture, and modern life.
The capital of Ukraine is also called “City of Golden Domes” as any visitor of Kyiv can witness firsthand the truly beautiful architecture that has survived over the centuries in the Ukrainian churches. Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, St.Sophia Cathedral, St. Michael’s, Kyrylivskyi, Vydubytskyi Monasteries, as well as St. Andrew’s Church – all contribute to the ensemble of aesthetically pleasing and culturally significant places of worship.
Within a short time span, Kyiv has bloomed with a number of museums, galleries, concert halls, new theaters and art centers. More than 50 museums of various genres are located within the boundaries of Kyiv. Collections of the National Arts Museum of Ukraine, Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko Arts Museum, Kyiv Museum of Russian Arts present national and world cultures. Those museum collections keep world-famous memorials, such as Ostrozka Bible (1581), art works by Velaskes, Bellini, Sinai icons of 6th and 7th centuries, unique collection of works by M. Vrubel, D. Levytskyi, M. Rerikh and others.
There are enough night clubs for young people with world class DJs. For family vacations there are cozy restaurants with open terraces overlooking the wondrous city nightlife.
